How We Farm

Our farming techniques are much more rigid than federal organic standards. No chemicals or synthetic fertilizers are ever incorporated. Instead, we focus on sustaining healthy living soil. We incorporate literal tons of organic compost, cover crops, and various rock supplements as needed into our soils each year. We take soil tests annually to accurately know what is going on underground. Intensive crop rotations are the backbone of our production plans. We practice minimal-tillage, and do our best to sequester as much carbon into the soil as possible. Our pest control strategies revolve around creating habitat for beneficial insects and pollinators through native hedgerows and intercropping with flowers and herbs.

For the past decade, Beet Generation Farm was based in South Sebastopol on private land, where we were blessed with sandy loam soils and wide open skies. In 2023 we relocated to a new property, on the traditional unceded territory of the Southern Pomo tribe, in what is now Forestville. We are a part of the Thomas Creek Ranch community, and the farm lies in a sunny field bordered by Green Valley Creek and Thomas Creek. This land was formerly home to Bennet Valley Organic Farm from 1988-2008, and we are excited to be revitalizing the farm land here and breathing new life into it. This land is home to a diversity of wildlife including coyotes, bobcats, mountain lions, many species of birds, frogs, and much more that we have yet to encounter. We are grateful for the opportunity to steward this land and work to create a thriving natural ecosystem and maintain this important wildlife corridor through our region. Our farm is not open to the public, but if you’d like to come visit, please reach out and we’d love to invite you to our next farm gathering!

We are humble forever students and teachers, always learning, growing and adapting our practices on this dynamic living farm
